Uber

Uber is a renowned name in transportation industry across world with presence in over 600 cities across 65 countries with a user base of 75 million. The pandemic posed a big problem for the company as their operations came to a halt because of lockdowns and thus highly affecting revenue generation. Amidst this crisis, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Thuan Pham has stepped down of his executive post. Thuan had joined the company in 2013 and after serving Uber for 7 years, he notified of his resignation on April 24 effective May 16.

The news came after speculations of possible job cuts in Uber. There have been reports of company considering to letting go of 20% employees out of 27,000 as of last year. An uber spokesperson denied the news of job cuts saying that the company has been considering multiple scenarios to reach to the other end of the crisis in a strong position. The engineering team will be taking over Pham’s functions for time being as the company is searching for a replacement.

Pham was born in Vietnam and then moved to US as a refugee in 1979. He completed his masters in electrical engineering and computer science from the prestigious MIT. Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO commented on Pham’s resignation saying that he is grateful for Pham’s services for last seven years. Uber began in 2009 by former CEO Travis Kalanick and has rapidly grown since then. The company has stayed unprofitable since long and they cut 1100 jobs last year. Uber withdrew its financial forecast for 2020 earlier this month. They are expected to release the financial report for first quarter on 7th May. The times are tough and every company is trying to come out of the crisis with in a stable state.
