The Indian Startup Association, which was formed to protest Google Play Store’s move to charge 30% commission on in-app purchases of digital goods, is planning to reach out to the Coalition For App Fairness, a US-based organization founded by 13 app publishers to take on Apple and Google’s duopoly in the United States, to understand how to structure itself, form its goals and strategy.

A technology startup founder, who is part of the 150-member Paytm-led association, said that although the US association was focussed on taking on Apple and their grouping has more issues with Google, the founder members have reached out to the US body to learn from their campaign against the big technology companies.

“Our focus was to raise our voice and make some noise and now we have to come up with a solution. We are looking at the Coalition to understand how to structure it. There are people in the group reaching out to them. However, that’s more focussed on Apple, and we are focussed on Google,” a tech founder, who did want to be named, said.

The discussions are, however, in early stages and nothing has been finalized yet, he added. The Coalition For App Fairness includes internet companies such as Epic Games, Tinder-parent Match Group, Basecamp, and Spotify. It was formed last month to overturn many issues around payment, policies, and dominance of Google Play Store and Apple App Store on the internet ecosystem.

The Indian group, however, is still an informal gathering and May soon take a more formal shape. As of now, the founders are bouncing off ideas on an old WhatsApp group named ‘India Startup Connect’.
